Xi, Trump Await Meeting in South Korea
(MENAFN) Chinese President Xi Jinping is scheduled to hold talks with US President Donald Trump on Thursday in South Korea, aiming for “positive outcomes,” Beijing confirmed on Wednesday.
According to Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun, the two leaders will “have an in-depth communication regarding major issues of strategic and long-term significance, as well as issues of mutual interest.”
“China stands ready to work with the US,” Guo stated at a press briefing in Beijing, emphasizing that the nation seeks “positive outcomes of this meeting" and hopes to inject "new momentum into the development of China-US relations.”
The summit will take place in the southeastern city of Busan, Guo highlighted, noting that “head-of-state diplomacy plays an irreplaceable strategic guiding role in China-US relations.”
He added that further details about the meeting will be shared in due course.
Last week, the White House confirmed that the leaders were set to meet on Oct. 30 in South Korea.
This encounter comes after months of diplomatic negotiations between Beijing and Washington, amid a bilateral trade dispute that has fluctuated during much of Trump’s nine months in office.
In a related development, Japan’s newly appointed Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and President Xi Jinping are also expected to hold their first summit on Friday, according to a news agency, citing government sources.
