Former South Korean President Challenges Life Sentence
Yoon’s legal team submitted the appeal five days after the Seoul Central District Court handed down the life sentence, as stated by reports.
In a statement, Yoon’s lawyers said they are challenging both the legal reasoning and the broader implications of the verdict.
“We think we have a responsibility to clearly point out the problems with this decision for not only court records but for future historical records,” the legal team said, accusing prosecutors of pursuing an “overzealous indictment” and highlighting what they described as contradictions in the lower court’s ruling.
Yoon was sentenced to life imprisonment on Thursday for leading an insurrection connected to his martial law attempt. The Seoul Central District Court found him guilty of acting as an "insurrection ringleader."
Last month, Yoon also received a five-year prison sentence on charges of obstructing investigators’ attempts to detain him last year. The ousted president has faced eight trial proceedings to date, including two in which he was convicted.
