South Korea Addresses North Korea’s Nuclear Ambitions
Vice Foreign Minister Jeong Yeon-doo delivered these comments at a conference on the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty held in New York. He stressed that Pyongyang presents an exceptional challenge, having withdrawn from the agreement while persistently advancing its nuclear weapons program.
"The DPRK is the only case that has benefited from the NPT regime, announced its withdrawal, and openly continued the development of nuclear weapons, thereby remaining the most pressing challenge to the nonproliferation regime," Jeong said.
He called on the global community to present a united stance, underscoring that North Korea’s security and economic prospects are tied to rejoining the treaty framework.
Jeong further urged Russia to stop its military collaboration with Pyongyang, cautioning that such cooperation weakens United Nations Security Council resolutions as well as the broader nonproliferation system.
