South Korean Court Jails Opposition Lawmaker in Illegal Funding Case
The Seoul High Court found Rep. Kweon Seong-dong guilty of receiving 100 million won (around $68,000) from a church official who was allegedly seeking influence or favors connected to the former administration of President Yoon Suk Yeol, a media outlet reported.
The case is part of a wider corruption investigation involving figures connected to the Unification Church. Church leader Han Hak-ja is also currently on trial on separate bribery-related charges tied to former first lady Kim Keon Hee. She remains in detention after a request for temporary release was denied earlier this year due to health concerns.
In a related development, the Seoul High Court is expected to issue a ruling on corruption charges involving former first lady Kim. A lower court had previously sentenced her to one year and eight months in prison in January.
The ongoing cases continue to draw attention in South Korea, as multiple high-profile figures face legal scrutiny over alleged political and financial misconduct.
