South Korea Holds Local Elections in First Test for President Lee

(MENAFN) Voters across South Korea began casting their ballots on Wednesday in nationwide local elections that are being viewed as an important indicator of public sentiment toward President Lee Jae Myung’s government after its first year in power.

According to reports, polling stations opened at 6 a.m. local time and voting officially got underway across the country under the supervision of electoral authorities.

The elections, which will determine local leadership positions for the next four years, are the ninth nationwide local polls held since local self-governance was reinstated in 1995. Voting is scheduled to conclude at 6 p.m. local time.

Reports indicate that approximately 44.6 million citizens are eligible to participate, with more than 14,000 polling locations operating nationwide. A significant portion of the electorate had already voted during the early voting period, which ended on Saturday, with participation surpassing 10 million voters.

According to reports, a total of 7,813 candidates are competing in races across the country, making it one of the largest local electoral contests in recent years.

The outcome is expected to provide insight into the political landscape and public attitudes toward the administration as it enters its second year in office.
