US, South Korea Discuss Nuclear Cooperation, Submarine Ambitions

(MENAFN) The United States and South Korea held two days of bilateral talks in Seoul this week focused on nuclear cooperation, according to a statement from the US State Department.

The consultations, which took place on Tuesday and Wednesday, were led by US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Allison Hooker and South Korean First Vice Foreign Minister Park Yoon-joo. They were followed by detailed discussions involving interagency officials from both countries.

In its statement, the State Department said, "Both sides committed to work towards delivering tangible outcomes as quickly as possible to establish milestones for reviewing progress throughout the year and to accelerate future consultations."

The talks come amid growing strategic cooperation between Washington and Seoul on nuclear-related issues. According to a news agency, citing South Korea’s Foreign Ministry, discussions included Seoul’s efforts to develop nuclear-powered submarines, obtain authority for uranium enrichment, and expand cooperation in shipbuilding.

The consultations follow a joint fact sheet released in November by US President Donald Trump and South Korean President Lee Jae Myung, which outlined US support for a framework that could allow South Korea to pursue civilian uranium enrichment and spent nuclear fuel reprocessing for peaceful purposes.
